The Lexington Brass Band and its guest choral group, ECCO, present their popular
holiday concert ’Tis the Season.

The program features both old classics and brand new music, including a world premiere
of Dr. Jason Thompson’s festive Sing We Now a New Noel. In recognition of artistic
excellence, Jason Thompson is the recipient of an Emerging Artist Award from the
Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, which is supported by state tax dollars
and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. The band is delighted to
present his imaginative new score.

Other modern scores will include ECCO singing the Ave Maria (1964) by German
composer Franz Xaver Biebl, and the brass ripping into Stephen Bulla’s Broadway-style
overture, The Proclamation of Christmas. Short Christmas works by Franz Liszt and
Hector Berlioz represent the classical past, while a Gospel-Rock version of the Christmas
spiritual Walk Together Children by our Trombone Quintet splits the difference.

ECCO will join the band in leading the audience in traditional carols, and the a cappella
chamber choir will also share a variety of both traditional and more contemporary
unaccompanied choral music of the season. ECCO is under the artistic direction of Dr.
Francois Botha, and the musical direction of Dr. Vicki Bell, professor of music theory
and director of the Chorale at Asbury University in Wilmore, KY.

The director of the Lexington Brass Band, Dr. Ronald W. Holz, professor of music
at Asbury University, designs the band’s exciting, scripted, one-hour concerts. He is
recognized as an international authority on the worldwide music and culture of brass
bands in the British tradition.
